The advancement of technology has led humans to attempt to control everything, but we forget that we share the planet with all other animals and plants. As cities expand rapidly, animals that share our spaces are forced to constantly adapt to ever-changing environments and learn to coexist with humans in "urban" settings. AIRSIDE, a flagship landmark of Nan Fung Group, and its GATE33 Arts Center have been dedicated to connecting community conservation with art and cultural exhibitions, inspiring the public's cognition and understanding of sustainable natural ecosystems. This Christmas, GATE33 once again collaborates with ALAN (Artists Who Love Animals and Nature), a local non-profit organization, to present a meaningful species-inclusive art project. From December 12, 2025, to March 3, 2026, they will showcase the interactive art exhibition "Wild Togetherland," allowing visitors to embark on a journey through the urban challenges faced by animals, from understanding their unique characteristics to reflecting on "respect for otherness," thus opening up new horizons for equal coexistence.

Wild Togetherland is a joint creation of Anita Lam, Project Director of GATE33 Arts Center and ALAN (ARTIST who LOVES ANIMALS and NATURE), and Match Chen (KaCaMa), the curator. It brings together artists from Hong Kong, Japan, and Italy to construct a balanced living space for humans and animals, using playful multimedia interactive art. Set in an "urban jungle," it creates a humorous Wild Togetherland.

Six interactive zones with wildlife art themes centered on "them"

Wild Togetherland sets up seven interactive zones at GATE33 Arts Center, inviting visitors to embark on a journey from the perspective of urban animals and experience their struggles firsthand. The exhibition presents species conflicts through fun games, revealing the rules unilaterally set by humans and giving a voice to the silent animal neighbors, prompting diverse reflections on coexistence.

 Chair that Grows a Tail

Chapter One: Becoming a Wildlife Resident

At the entrance of the exhibition, Sino Inc., a design team from Kanagawa, Japan, presents Chair that Grows a Tail with new content, marking the beginning of Wild Togetherland. It invites you to become a resident of the wildlife park. When you sit down, a tail will randomly grow from the back of the chair, including fluffy fox tails, rattlesnakes, pigeons, monkeys, and other tails of animals found in urban settings around the world! In a relaxing and healing manner, it symbolizes the transformation from human to animal, becoming one of the urban wildlife members and joining this fantasy animal party.
 

RGB Landscape

Chapter Two: Wildlife Neighbours in the City

The two-person creative team Carnovsky from Milan, Italy, presents their new work, RGB Landscape, with their signature RGB color palette. They create a colorful light and shadow experimental interactive experience, leading viewers into an optical fantasy world to understand biodiversity. Immerse yourself in the urban ecosystems of Italy and Hong Kong and explore the native animal silhouettes hidden within, realizing that wildlife has always coexisted with humans in bustling cities. 

A Mobile of Coexistence

Chapter Three: The Power of Balance (1)

Hong Kong product designer and artist Alize Lam presents A Mobile of Coexistence, an interactive installation that invites viewers to reflect on the relationship of coexistence. Inspired by dynamic balancing structures suspended in space, the installation is presented as a large hanging art piece with charms depicting common Hong Kong animals, humans, and buildings. This dynamic charm symbolizes ecological balance: just as the installation requires mechanical balance to remain stable, a city that embraces biodiversity relies on harmonious coexistence between all life forms. Visitors are also invited to participate in constructing this symbolic city charm, trying to maintain its balance.

 Balanced Harmony

Chapter Three: The Power of Balance (2)

Balanced Harmony is an interactive installation created by local tech art team The Collective and visual artist Ruby Mak. It consists of a giant rotating carousel on the screen and five sets of balancing devices representing the sky, ocean, land, plants, and humans in the physical exhibition space.

Viewers are invited to step onto the balancing devices and find their balance point using their sense of balance. Once everyone finds their balance, the carousel starts spinning, symbolizing the delicate balance between humans and wildlife. This harmonious coexistence between all life forms is what keeps the world running smoothly and maintains urban biodiversity.

Chapter Four: Between the Law of Nature and Man-made Rules, Who Will Be the Ultimate Winner?

(Law of Nature vs. Law of Humans, who wins?)    

Urban Animal Fables by Hong Kong creative duo Stickyline features the familiar "wild boar" as the protagonist, leading a group of piglets across the road in a queue, presenting the absurd phenomenon of animals obeying human rules in a surreal manner. Created with paper art sculptures, the playful scene prompts viewers to reflect: do urban wildlife have to obey human rules to survive in today's cities?

There is also a set of "pigeons using a toilet" paired with an electronic interactive game installation, Toilet Training, created by The Collective. Viewers need to sit on a toilet and use a joystick and buttons to move left and right, finding the timing to dodge pigeon droppings falling from the sky. Through this humorous interaction, the installation prompts viewers to consider whether imposing human rules on animals is a form of arrogance towards nature.
 

Interspecies Council

Chapter Five: If Animals Could Talk

Welcome to the Interspecies Council, where we listen with our hearts to 11 different "animal neighbors" commonly found in urban settings. The exhibition displays 11 animal headpieces, and in the short film, these animals have their own voices and can express their thoughts and needs. 

Under the guidance of professional artists, 38 students from The Harbour School, along with actual information provided by the Animal Rights Education Group and the Hong Kong Outdoor Ecology Education Association, gave voice to the "silent neighbors."     
Chapter Six: Wildlife Neighbour Ambassadors

In the final chapter of the exhibition, GATE33 Arts Center shares the dedication and stories of local advocates and conservation organizations. It only takes an empathetic mindset to truly see and value these lives. Let us ask ourselves: how can we take the first step towards genuine harmonious coexistence with all beings?
